"One evening
in 1984,
householders
in about 400
communities
across the
country
flipped on
their porch
lights to
signify
their
commitment
to keeping
their
neighborhood
streets
safe.
It was the
first year
of National
Night Out,
an event
designed to
heighten
community

and
strengthen
partnerships
between the
police and
the

they serve."
